Are you a long-term expatriate or have you recently arrived in Belgium as a student, employee, worker or self-employed person? And you're wondering how the Belgian healthcare system works and what you need to do to register with a health insurance organization in Belgium? Expats Health insurance (formerly Partena Business & Expats) is the Belgian health insurance organization for expatriates, but also for cross-border workers who move between two countries (such as Belgium and France).

What is social security in Belgium?

In Belgium, healthcare is covered by social security. When you fall ill, see a doctor or dentist, are admitted to hospital or buy medicines in a pharmacy, part of the cost is covered by the State. And if you have to stop working because of illness, accident or pregnancy, you will receive a replacement income. The amounts of these reimbursements or benefits are set by the INAMI (National Institute for Sickness and Invalidity insurance).

What is a health insurance organization (FR: mutuelle / NL: ziekenfonds) in Belgium?

Anyone living and/or working in Belgium can benefit from social security provided they are registered with a health insurance provider. This is an independent health insurance fund, also known as a “mutualité”; it is a private organisation that is responsible for reimbursing your healthcare related costs and also paying you compensation allowances in the event of incapacity for work.

Why should you join a health insurance organization?

Unlike in some other countries, your registration with a Belgian health insurance provider is not automatic ; it is up to you to do the necessary and register. It is only once you are enrolled with such organization that you can receive reimbursements for your healthcare expenses or compensation in the event of incapacity for work.
